South-South Cooperation in Response to COVID-19
South-South and Triangular Cooperation provide a means by which UNDP can work together with China to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals. In the context of COVID-19, UNDP is supporting China to conduct active international exchange and cooperation to fight the global pandemic. This includes providing assistance to developing countries with weaker public health systems to improve their capacity and performance in epidemic prevention, and supporting the COVID-19 Global Humanitarian Response Plan of the UN.
Drawing on our long-term experience in supporting China’s South-South Cooperation and Triangular Cooperation, UNDP is in a strong position to assist with:
Convening Stakeholders for SDG Achievement
- Better meeting the local needs of South-South Cooperation partner countries with assistance from China, further leveraging the potential of China’s international engagement towards achieving the SDGs.
- Providing a global platform to bring together governments, the private sector, think tanks, technology providers, and financial institutions, through match-making events which support global cooperation between South-South providers and recipients to address the challenges that have arisen in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic.
- Supporting the design and implementation of demand-driven South-South Cooperation and Triangular Cooperation projects with Chinese expertise and funding, such as China’s South-South Cooperation Assistance Fund (SSCAF). UNDP aims to reinforce developing countries’ preparedness for future public health emergencies, strengthen the ability of disadvantaged groups deal with the socio-economic impact of the pandemic, and support longer-term socio-economic recovery measures.
Learning and Experience Sharing
- Facilitating dialogues and exchanges among South-South Cooperation partners, development partners, and key stakeholders to share China’s experience and solutions in combatting the COVID-19 pandemic to be adapted for different country contexts.
- Enhancing mutual learning between partner countries and China on critical issues in post-COVID-19 world to strengthen preparedness, response, and recovery by increasing local capacities in medical waste management and PPEs manufacturing, enhancing knowledge, and experience sharing.
